Why Men Lie and Women Cry

Bringing up a child was all new to Diana. His mother's advice was invaluable. But Diana seemed completely unwilling to take advice. She became possessive of Travis and was always arguing with Bernadette and complaining endlessly to Richard about his mother. He loved Diana but she was driving him nuts with her emotional outbursts. Having a typical problem-solving male brain, Richard thought he should not have to work hard all day then come home to solve arguments between his wife and his mother. He began to think that life would be less complicated if he was single again.

Mother- and daughter-in-law must forge a bond if their lives are to work. Women did this naturally for survival in the cave and need to do it now for survival in the modern world, for a stress-free life and to avoid dragging men into the problems. Women need to sort this relationship out between themselves without getting their husbands/sons involved. Men may actually enjoy the attention of having two women fighting over them and while this continues it feeds their egos. The wife needs to be clever enough to take control of the situation and ensure that problems are dealt with strictly between her and her mother-in-law. When this works it is a win-win situation. The last thing a woman needs is her mother-in-law complaining about her to her husband; she really needs an rather than an enemy.

This drama is not uncommon. It is played out in families the world over. In some countries the problems are worse than others. In Russia, where young married couples live with parents because apartments are rarely available, a strong culture of mother-in-law hatred has arisen. In Spain there is a disease known as Suegritis, an illness said to be caused by mothers-in-law. There is a carnival whistle known as Masasuegras, meaning 'kill mother-in-law'. In the Indian capital Delhi, there's actually a jail wing specifically for mothers-in-law, arrested for demanding excessive dowries from their daughters-in-law, and breaking up marriages. It is constantly under threat from overcrowding.

In Spain and Italy, a mother-in-law can be sued for damages
